SARS Tax Glossary South Africa: Every Term Explained (2026)
Last Updated: September 2026 | Reading Time: 12 minutes
The complete plain-English glossary of South African tax terms – from auto assessment to VDP – each linked to a full guide and the official SARS source.
Quick Answer
A SARS tax glossary explains the terms you meet on eFiling and your tax certificates in plain English. Key 2026 terms: the ITR12 is your return, the ITA34 is SARS’s assessment of it, an IRP5 is your employer’s earnings certificate, and provisional tax is pay-as-you-go tax for non-salary income. Every term below links to a full guide and the official SARS source.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a deduction and a rebate?
A deduction (like retirement contributions) reduces your taxable income before tax is calculated. A rebate (like the R17,235 primary rebate) reduces the tax itself after calculation. A deduction is worth more to higher earners; a rebate is worth the same to everyone.
Where can I find the official SARS glossary?
SARS publishes two official glossaries on its website – Glossary A-M and Glossary N-Z – plus a multilingual tax terminology publication covering all 11 official South African languages. Our glossary links to these official sources throughout.
What does ‘year of assessment’ mean?
The year of assessment (tax year) for individuals runs from 1 March to the last day of February. The 2026 year of assessment ended on 28 February 2026, and its returns are filed during the 2026 filing season.
