What Is a SARS Auto Assessment? Read This Before You Accept

Last Updated: September 2026 | Reading Time: 7 minutes

Between 1 and 12 July 2026 SARS auto-assessed millions of taxpayers using employer, bank and medical data. Accept blindly and you could donate money to the fiscus – here is what to check first.

Quick Answer

A SARS auto assessment is a tax return SARS completes for you using third-party data from employers, banks, medical schemes and retirement funds. If you received an SMS or email between 1 and 12 July 2026, review the assessment on eFiling: if correct, do nothing; if wrong or incomplete, file a corrected ITR12 by 23 October 2026.

How the Auto Assessment Works

SARS matches data it already holds about you – your IRP5 from your employer, IT3(b) interest from banks, medical scheme contributions, retirement fund data – and calculates your tax automatically. You receive an SMS or email telling you whether you are due a refund, owe money, or break even. The official explanation is on the SARS auto assessment page.

Five Things to Check Before Accepting

  1. All income is there – a second job, rental income, freelance work or foreign income is NOT in SARS’s data. If you have any of these, the auto assessment is wrong by definition.
  2. All deductions are there – retirement annuity contributions you made personally, extra medical expenses, donations and home office claims are usually missing.
  3. IRP5 figures match your certificate – compare against the paper copy (see the IRP5 guide).
  4. Travel allowance claims need your logbook captured – auto assessments ignore it.
  5. Banking details are current so a refund can actually reach you – update them here.

If the Auto Assessment Is Wrong

Do not accept it and do not panic. Simply complete and submit a corrected ITR12 on eFiling or the MobiApp by 23 October 2026 – include everything SARS had plus what it missed. If the deadline has passed, you will need the objection process.

A wrong auto assessment that you ignore becomes final, and SARS collects on it. Our paid auto assessment review service exists precisely for this: we check every line before it costs you.

If You Are Due a Refund

Refunds of R100 or more pay automatically within about 72 hours of acceptance into your verified bank account. Smaller amounts roll over on your SARS account. If the refund does not land, work through our refund optimisation guide.

Important: this is not a free service. TaxSeason2026.online is the website of Admin Boss – Tax division, a private South African tax practice that assists individuals with the preparation and filing of their SARS tax returns for a professional fee. We are not SARS and we are not affiliated with SARS or any government body. SARS eFiling itself is a free government channel – our fee covers expert review, deduction optimisation and done-for-you filing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to accept my auto assessment?

No. If everything is correct, no action is needed – the assessment stands. But if income or deductions are missing, you should file a corrected ITR12 by 23 October 2026. Accepting a wrong assessment makes it final and waiving deductions is permanent.

What if I was not auto-assessed?

If you received no SMS or email by 12 July 2026, you were not selected and must file your own ITR12 between 13 July and 23 October 2026 (or by 22 January 2027 if you are a provisional taxpayer).

Can SARS auto-assess me if I have rental income?

SARS may still auto-assess you, but rental income is not in its data – so the assessment will be incomplete and you are legally obliged to file a corrected return declaring the rental income.
