Frequently Asked Questions
What documents do I need to file my tax return in South Africa?
At minimum: IRP5 or IT3(a) certificates, IT3(b) and IT3(c) investment certificates, your medical aid tax certificate, retirement annuity certificates, a travel logbook if you receive a travel allowance, records of any rental or freelance income, and your SARS eFiling login details.
Can I file my 2026 return without all my documents?
You can, but it is risky. SARS pre-populates much of the data, yet anything missing – like an RA certificate – means a lost deduction, and anything guessed can trigger a verification or penalty. Rather collect the full checklist first or let a practitioner reconstruct missing certificates.
How far back must I keep my tax documents?
SARS requires you to keep supporting documents for five years from the date you submitted the return. Keep both digital and paper copies of IRP5s, certificates, logbooks and receipts.
